Work Study Overview

The academic portion of the course is 24 weeks full-time, and runs from 5:00pm to 9:00pm, Monday to Friday. The remaining 24 weeks of the course is a work placement.

In this program, students will learn how to engage in the entire UX design process, taking abstract ideas and refining them into concrete solutions. Skills taught include user experience research, planning, design, testing, and technical aspects of user experience design. They’ll work in a team-based environment, set up collaborative workflows and communicate with their clients, designers and potential employers. Throughout the program students will have the opportunity to network and build connections with hiring partners and professionals. They’ll also be given an introduction to their field and the skills necessary to work on technical teams in an agency, in-house, start-up, corporate or freelance environment. By the end of the course they’ll have developed a robust portfolio to jump-start their careers.

UX Design FAQs

What software will I use?

The UX Design program uses many different softwares. To keep structure and communication clear, we use tools like Slack and Trello. For our design work, we use Omnigraffle, Axure, Sketch, and Invision. All tools that are actively used in the industry.

What jobs can I get with this course?

Past graduates have gone to work as Junior UX Designers, User Experience Researchers, Interaction Designers and Content Strategists.

Do I need a design background?

Not necessarily, however it can be beneficial if you already have a foundational knowledge in graphic design.

How is RED different?

RED stands for Real Education and Development. We offer a totally unique approach to learning; our school more closely resembles a real-world agency than what you might expect in a traditional learning environment. Our curriculum is also very different in that it is designed to be highly active and experiential, which means that you are working in student teams on real-world projects with real clients from our network of community and charity partners, producing

Admission Process

We operate on a rolling admissions system, admitting students that meet our criteria as they apply up until the application deadline.

1. Completion of online application form.

2. An in-person or virtual (Skype) interview with an Admissions team member and an instructor from the program.

3. A program specific assignment assigned by the instructor.

4. All prospective students are required to demonstrate a minimum level of English before they’re admitted to RED Academy. If you are an International Student or English is not one of your native languages, we may require one of the following exams:

  • Duolingo English Test 60 or higher
  • TOEFL iBT score of 90 or higher (TOEFL Paper score – 575 or higher)
  • IELTS Academic score 6.5 or higher
  • Cambridge Exam equivalency (CAE)

 

5-steps-application

Applying For A Visa

For international students (those who do not hold Canadian Citizenship or Permanent Residency in Canada), that intend to take one of our programs, you will be required to apply for a Study & Work Permit within Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC). You may apply using IRCC online application tool or by paper.

Depending on your country of citizenship, you may need a Temporary Resident Visa (TRV) to enter Canada, in addition to your Permits.

These are some of the required documents to apply:

  • Passport with at least 15 months left before expiry
  • Photo (IRCC has specific requirements of the Visa application photograph)
  • Proof of financial support
  • RED Academy’s Letter of Acceptance (LOA)
  • RED Academy’s DLI number

We encourage our future student to seek help when applying for the Study & Work Permits, however, please, refer to this IRCC link for further information on how to apply for your permit.

If you are transferring to RED Academy from a Canadian educational institution, you must notify IRCC when you change institutions in your MyCIC account.
It is your responsibility to know and understand the International Student Immigration Regulations. For more information, visit the IRCC website.

Payment Process

The Professional Work-Study Programs cost $9,500 for 480 hours of instruction plus 480 hours of work experience. A deposit of $1650 ($250 non-refundable) is required upon acceptance into the program to reserve one’s place. 50% of the balance is due 30 days before the course starts and full payment is due before the program begins.
