About the course

The future of tech is here and it has never been more exciting! With emergence of affordable headsets, like Google Cardboard and Samsung Gear, virtual reality, augmented reality and mixed reality is the new frontier of design and software development. This course was created for anybody who is interested in this space and wants to be a part of it.

In this 10-week course, you will learn the fundamentals of design and experience in the context of virtual reality, storytelling and content creation for VR. You will be able to get your hands dirty by working on your own VR project using Google Cardboard.

Freelance UX Designer

Ryan is a seasoned interaction designer who can take ideas all the way from concept to code. He spent the first 10 years of his career mastering design for the responsive web and smartphone applications, and has spent the last 2 years transitioning that expertise to volumetric UIs. Formerly a member of Adobe/PhoneGap team, and briefly a member of the W3C, Ryan currently does freelance product management & design for mixed and virtual reality.

Michelle Knight
Senior Copywriter, Pound & Grain

Michelle Knight is a Senior Copywriter at Pound & Grain Digital Creative Agency. She has created campaigns and interactive stories for brands like CMT, SAP, TELUS, Escents, HeadsUpGuys, and Vodafone in Ireland and Canada. Along with, VR specific projects for SAP. Her background is stitched to a BA (Hons) in Media, Film, and Psychology, and an MSc in Creative Advertising. She is currently exploring virtual reality’s role in communications.

Miguel Testa
Co-founder & Unity Developer, Panorabbit

Miguel first fell in love with Virtual Reality in an HTC Vive Game Jam held before the system’s release. Together with his co-workers at Sony Pictures Imageworks, Miguel built a short VR game during the event. He got hooked on creating immersive apps, and soon started building VR Experiences for Music and Real Estate. It wasn’t long before the entrepreneurial bug bit Miguel, and he co-founded PanoRabbit, a VR enabled panorama sharing platform. When not working on PanoRabbit or doing schoolwork at UBC, Miguel enjoys making music and cycling.


How is RED different?

RED stands for Real Education and Development. We offer a totally unique approach to learning; our school more closely resembles a real-world agency than what you might expect in a traditional learning environment. Our curriculum is also very different in that it is designed to be highly active and experiential, which means that you are working in student teams on real-world projects with real clients from our network of community and charity partners, producing

Do I need to be a developer to take this course?

No, but some basic knowledge and understanding of coding languages will help you.

Do you provide headsets for this course?

Yes, we do. You will be provided with Google Cardboard and will have access to our in-house VR hardware as well.

Applying For A Visa

You do not need a study permit if you plan to take a course or program in Canada that lasts six months or less. You must complete the course or program within the period authorized for your stay in Canada.

Most travelers need a valid entry document such as an Electronic Travel Authorization (eTA) or a visa to visit Canada. This will depend on your citizenship or your situation.

All visa-exempt foreign nationals except for U.S. citizens need an eTA to enter Canada as tourists. The eTA authorizes to visit Canada for up to six months or until the date prescribed by a border services officer upon arrival to Canada.

Applying for an eTA is a simple, inexpensive (CAD$7) process that takes just a few minutes to complete online. In addition to a fast process, the eTA is electronically linked to a traveler’s passport and is valid for five years or until the passport expires. 

Travelers with passports from visa-required countries and territories need a visitor visa (temporary resident visa) to enter Canada.

A visa is an official document that is inserted inside a passport giving permission for you to come to Canada.

Payment Process

The Essentials Part-time Programs cost $1,900 for 30 hours of instruction. A deposit of $950 ($250 non-refundable) is required upon acceptance into the program to reserve one’s place. Full payment is due before the program begins.
