What is UI & Communication Design?
In every encounter or interaction, experience design is a defining element in how a product or service will be perceived by the end user. In digital media, the medium through which users can experience a product is called an “interface”. If the visual components of the interface are designed beautifully, crafted strategically, and meet the needs of the user, the outcome of the experience will be positively impactful and memorable.
A great digital User Interface Designer (UI) has the skills and knowledge to create delightful visual designs that are true to the brand while balancing seamless interactivity and ease of navigation for apps and websites. With today’s growing consumer expectations of flawless, high quality experiences, the caliber of the UI Design can be what makes or breaks the success of a business.
Throughout the 12 week RED Academy UI & Communication Design Program, students will engage in the creative process and learn how to apply design theory foundations to create engaging user interfaces for apps and websites. They will learn the technical aspects of User Interface Design while simultaneously building the skills to work on multidisciplinary teams in an agency, start up, or freelance environment.

What you'll learn
Typography, Colour, and Composition
Create coherent and balanced designs by making good use of colour, typography and other visual elements.
User Interface Design & Prototyping
Get an overview of the UX Design process, and collaborate with UX students on creating intuitive interfaces that guide the user to accomplish their tasks.
Web & App Design
Create designs for the responsive web, and build interfaces that are optimized for iOS and Android.
Design Software Use
Learn Photoshop, Illustrator, Sketch and InVision, and get an introduction to InDesign.
Lead brainstorming sessions to facilitate conceptual thinking and adopt a strategic and human-centric approach to problem solving.
Workflow & Client Management
Manage client expectations, set up workflows, and learn to present, communicate and pitch creative work to stakeholders.
Identify and create the different components of a brand including visual elements and brand storytelling.
Build a strong personal portfolio website in Squarespace and apply strategic thinking while presenting your work to potential employers and clients.
Web Development Foundations
Learn to write basic HTML and CSS code and identify the limitations and possibilities presented when working with different programming languages.
Optimize designs for high engagement, conversion, and tracking, and get familiar with the world of advertising.

Julie is a Designer with expertise in crafting highly engaging digital experiences for organizations like TELUS, YYoga, Escents, and Rutgers University at digital agency Pound & Grain. Originally from New-Caledonia, she joined the RED team where she uses her well-rounded set of skills and her background in fine arts & coding to fuel her strong enthusiasm for teaching UI & Communication Design. Julie is passionate about thinking of innovative ways to leverage human-centric design at every possible moment – whether it’s through her teaching, her design work, or while contributing to the betterment of her surroundings.
With over 5 years of experience as a graphic designer taking on projects and campaigns across print and digital mediums, Andro is driven by design that strikes a balance between the creative and strategic fields. Having graduated from RED Academy’s own UX Design Program, Langara’s Electronic Media Design and Communication Arts Program as well as a BA in Management Communications Technology, Andro brings in an expansive wealth of knowledge, skills and insights in the realm of User Interface and Communication Design. An avid runner and lover of all music, Andro’s days are fuelled by his passion to create compelling stories, engaging brands and bottomless cups of coffee.

UI & Communication Design FAQs
What type of projects will I work on?
Throughout the program, you will be briefed on 5 different projects and get time to work on your portfolio. Each project covers something different and at the same time builds upon the previous one. We are always working to create interesting and fun projects that offers deep challenge to help you grow from a tech newbie to a savvy designer.
What software will I learn?
Our main focus for technical skills will be in Adobe Photoshop and Illustrator. You will also get to know Sketch, InVision, and receive a quick introduction to Adobe InDesign. All tools are actively used in the industry. To keep structure and communication clear, we use tools like Slack and Trello.
Do I need to use a Mac for this program or can I use a PC?
We recommend for you to use a Mac as the lessons will be taught on a Mac and most design softwares are optimized to run on Macs. We also highly recommend for you to get a mouse as it will be easier to work in Photoshop and Illustrator.
What jobs can I get with this course?
Possible employment outcome includes: User Interface Designer, Interactive Designer, Web Designer, Graphic Designer, Production Designer, Communication Designer.
Do I need a design background?
Not necessarily, however it can be beneficial if you have a good sense of style and have a keen interest in visual arts.
What are the requirements for entering the program?
Our requirements are more focused on attitude and behaviour. We concentrate on a self-directed learning model which allows the students to take control over their own learning, creating a more open environment that can reflect how a student learns. Because of this, we require our students to be kind, ready to learn, and motivated for their own long-term benefit. We also expect students to be proficient using a computer and have good English communication skills.
What is the difference between full-time and part-time programs?
Our foundation programs are Part Time evening programs that run twice a week over 10 weeks, with a total of 60 hours of instruction. These programs are designed to give our students a hands-on introduction to the field of study. Students work on one major project throughout the duration of the program.
Our professional programs are 12 week, full-time programs that are designed to produce entry-level professionals. The professional programs include 480 hours of instruction and lab time in the school, will involve at least 5 major projects, and include significant professional development time to prepare students for life in the tech industry.
How is RED different?
RED stands for Real Education and Development. We offer a totally unique approach to learning; our school more closely resembles a real-world agency than what you might expect in a traditional learning environment. Our curriculum is also very different in that it is designed to be highly active and experiential, which means that you are working in student teams on real-world projects with real clients from our network of community and charity partners.
Our instructors however, are really our secret sauce: they are highly experienced, real world professionals, and you will work in an environment that offers an amazing student to instructor ratio of 6 to 1.
Will you help me find a job?
Yes. We have a highly experienced staff primary responsibility is to get our students into jobs they love. Our hiring partner network includes Hootsuite, Unbounce, Telus, Live Nation, Vision Critical, Cossette, Drive Digital, 6S Marketing, Noise Digital, Pound & Grain and many more.
We have put in place an intensive professional development training program in addition to the technical skills we teach. We teach students how to nail a technical interview. We get our students online and offline brand to an industry ready standard. We provide enumerable networking opportunities to get students feet wet early in their program.

Yes we do. After paying your deposit, there are two options:
