High Demand, Low Supply – The Future of BC Tech

It seems like Vancouver’s rapidly growing tech sector has headlined just about every media source. With companies like Hootsuite, Microsoft, and Amazon calling YVR home, this corner of B.C. is fast becoming recognized as the west coast version of Silicon Valley.

In fact, a recent report in Business in Vancouver revealed that 42% of office leasing’s are largely driven by one sector: tech. So what exactly is putting our city on the intellectual tourism map? A secure financial structure, our signature west coast lifestyle, and our unrivalled talent; the latter, however, is becoming increasingly more challenging to find.

Last month The Vancouver Sun reported our city will have more than 15,500 tech job openings between now and 2019. This is just one of the many recent headlines that highlight the growing number of tech positions and the shortage of qualified professionals.

And this tech boom isn’t just prevalent in Vancouver, but rather across the country. By 2020, it’s said that demand for IT jobs (and their salaries) will rise up to 22% percent. According to Global News, businesses are hungry for skilled Canadian workers, and because there’s such a small talent pool to choose from, they’ve had to recruit on an international scale. Tech execs are even rallying for easier immigration grants from the federal government to fulfill the growing need.

However, it’s not enough to have some tech experience. In order to be hired, you need to have honed expertise and skills, whether it is web development, UX design, or digital marketing. In such a fast-paced and growing industry, these types of workers are highly sought after. To address this serious skills shortage, there need to be more resources for budding tech professionals to learn, grow, and nurture the community.
