In our on-going RED Alumni series, we catch up with graduates to learn what happened after they left our doors. This week we sat down with Digital Marketing
student Frances Young to learn what she’s been up to post-RED.
What were you doing before RED Academy?
In May I graduated with a BA in Psychology and a Minor in Creative Writing at UBC. Just before graduation I landed a job working as a Marketing Coordinator at Canterbury Coffee, a local gourmet coffee roaster and manufacturer.
How did you hear about RED Academy?
I received an email telling me about the program.
What interested you in the program?
The program was so comprehensive because it taught everything from SEO to content marketing. I’ve always been interested in the field of marketing, but I didn’t know much about digital. I did however know that those skills are more in demand within the workplace, so I signed up. It was also great that a part time program was offered, which means I could still work while taking the course.
How did what you’ve learned in Digital Marketing help you land the new job?
I work within the field of search engine marketing, so definitely learning about Google Adwords
was helpful. I think employers want to see that I keep up to date with new technology and analytics platforms. I found throughout my interviews that they were all impressed by RED’s comprehensive Digital Marketing program.
What is the new job?
I work as a Search Engine Marketing (SEM)
Campaign Manager for Yellow Pages. I’ll help manage SEM campaigns for up to 40 clients looking to improve their digital advertising.
What advice do you have for those thinking of getting into the Digital Marketing Program?
Use your resources! RED has a plethora of fantastic resources that can help you attain that dream job if you’re willing to put in the hustle. My time at RED was definitely an intense period but if you do your best to connect with the digital marketing instructors
and the students, you’ll definitely be able to get your foot in the door within the digital marketing industry. Also, make sure to check the kitchen often cause there’s a high chance Red Truck lager will be there.
Colin is the CEO / Managing Director of RED Academy. He originally started his career as a classically trained musician and sound engineer, before switching to the tech industry where he has been working for the past 15 years. While he sounds British, don’t let that accent fool you; his roots are Dutch, and he calls Amsterdam his hometown.
Also the founder of Drive Digital, one of Western Canada’s biggest digital agencies, Colin is inspired by watching people create and seeing them find fulfillment in doing something they believe in. Colin is excited by the idea that the Internet connects us all, increasing transparency and accountability. He strongly believes that purpose is a bigger driver in people than profit, which will lead us to a better, fairer, more conscious world – values that dictate the foundation of RED.
